1915: Militia officer training group in the 21st Infantry (Woollahra) Regiment at Victoria Barracks. My father told me he became a sergeant in the "home guard", even though his eyesight prevented him enlisting in the regular army. Robert's enlisment application of 2 May 1916 showed that on 3 May 1916 he was accepted by the recruiting officer but rejected by the medical officer who cited strabismus and astigmatism. Subsequently he joined the militia since the militia was compulsory for all men between the ages of 18 and 26 in this period. Note: The 6th INFANTRY BRIGADE (Militia). 21st (Woollahra) Infantry was located as follows: Head-Quarters - Paddington ; Machine Gun Sect. - Paddington.
