Note the dry-stone wall. In early times the slopes were well terraced with stone walls for agricultural purposes… sourced from local quarries and stone masons. Grapes were grown here on suitable slopes before
Phylloxera killed the vines in about 1865. The MARCHARD family emigrated to Australia in 1852 ('Triton') , 1854 ('Marbs' & 'Catteaux Wattell')… at that time they described themselves as “wine-dressers”.
